Marlies Schoenmakers
Marlies was born in the Netherlands in 1961 and moved to Curaçao
in 1995. She studied in Tilburg (NL) as well as on Curaçao.
She is highly inspired by nature with its smooth, soft lines
or shells and seads, of which the island is a generous provider.
The flowing form, the stilled movement. That is what Marlies
Schoenmakers' work is all about. All the attention is drawn
to the sensuality of the form. Often her work has its natural
color; at other times it is covered with a small layer of engobe
in one color as a support for the form. Her work was exhibited
in the Netherlands and Curaçao.

Jean Girigori
Jean was born in the Dominican Republic but she has been living
in Curaçao since 1972. Her work consists of tropical
colours projecting every day life on the island. Women, fishes
and market places play a central role in her works of art. Her
work displays a certain amount of naiveté that can also
be found in Haitian art, and it has a Caribbean spirit. www.jeangirigori.com.
Tony Monsanto
Tony’s work is two and three-dimensional.
In his paintings he embeds three-dimensional forms. His roots
are a re-occurring theme in the works of art. The tension between
the present, the past and the different cultural styles are
felt in his structures. His cloths consist of three layers;
they have excellent forms and paper pieces.
Jose Maria Capricorne
Jose was born in Curaçao in 1932. His father is of Haitian
origin. He grew up between the industriousness of small craftsmen
in Otrobanda, a central city section in Curaçao with
many alleys. Jose studied at the Graphic School in Amsterdam.
Strong outlining and a mixture of tropical colours characterize
his works or art. His configurations can be considered ambiguous
by nature. The visitor will note many figures and associations
in Jose’s paintings. The eye, the leaf, the butterfly
and the fish are re-occurring symbols. The forms in his paintings
often have human and animal traits. Jose is the co-founder of
the local art academy of which he was director for a long time.
He received the Cola Debrot prize in 1985 and the Curaçao
Museum Lustrum prize in 1988.

of long structures that are made up of layers with signs and
illustrations.
Hortence Brouwn
Hortence initially made clay sculptures. Then in the seventies,
under the guidance of Dries Krijkamp, she cast and moulded a
well-known concrete sculpture in the Netherlands. The theme

she subtly projects human emotions, such as female sensuality,
love and happiness. She also uses limestone, marble and bronze
in her work of art. www.brouwn.com.
Nena Sanchez
Nena Sanchez was born in Curaçao. In her paintings it
can clearly be noted that she grew up on a tropical island.
She paints beautiful, tropical landscapes with colourful flowers,
trees, beaches and wooden homes. Her paintings are often variations
of certain themes. Women dressed in blue play an important role.
Similar to unique places on the island her paintings can make
a great impression on you. www.nenasanchez.com.

Yubi Kirindongo
Yubi acquired international fame with
his ‘bumper art’ creations: he converted chrome
bumper parts into abstract creatures. Yubi changed his style
and use of style very frequently. Nearly all of his basic materials
originate from scrap heap or they are washed ashore in the north
side of Curaçao. In his works or art you will see scraps
of stone, plastic, wood, old iron and car tyres. His recycling
art was a.o. exhibited in the prestigious exposition of …
