Interview
with Diana Lebacs
You can call her many things. A teacher, writer, actress,
idealist, but above all things she’s a one of
a kind creator. Diana Lebacs is truly an artist and
whole Curaçao knows her for that. But what has
she been up to lately? One thing’s for sure, she
seems far from quitting. What better way than asking
this herself.

First things first. What do you prefer to
call yourself and why?
I think I can call myself a pioneer and an innovator due
to the fact that in the past I was always the young one in
the group trying new things. Next to that there is that part
of my character which is very determined to make efforts succeed.

So we may assume that as a little girl
you were already aspiring after the person you have become
now?
Well, regarding writing… I’ve been writing and
telling stories since I was ten years old in the fifth grade.
My classmates loved to listen to my stories and were always
asking for more. Later on in High School I started writing
novels in my copy books and all the students used to borrow
these ‘books’ to read at home. From that moment
I knew without any doubt that this was going to be my vocation.

Your latest book is called “Fula
Fula”. What made you choose that name?
Children in the pre school age should develop all their senses
before entering the big school. So I wrote a series of books
called “At’aki mi boka, Nanishi riba dje, Dos
wowo pa mi mira, Orea pa tende” referring respectively
to the sense of taste, scent, sight and hearing. Unfortunately
there was still one missing: the sense of touch! With the
launching of “Fula Fula” (Feel, Feel) a ten year
old dream finally came true.

Does that say anything about your person?
Yes. I always make my dreams come true, even if it takes a
long time.

Calling you a cultural activist may be
in order. But for the last couple of years you’ve been
quite politically active too. How come?
As an activist I have the education and formation of the Curaçao
people in view. We are a young nation with potentials which
makes it interesting to help building it up to its benefit.
Now we find ourselves at a new stage in route of our developments
and guess what… Diana will be there carrying her idealistic
torch.

Finally, what achievement would you like
to see being realized yet in your life?
Difficult question. All my achievements up to now came to
me as a big surprise, a gift of God and mankind and as a reward
for my hard working spirit. I want to keep it that way and
wait for the next surprise.
