In colonial times the landscape of Curaçao was divided into plantations. These plantations were large pieces of land used for agriculture, the breeding of cattle and the production of salt. In the nineteenth century over fourteen plantations were built in Curaçao. The head of the plantation was called the shon and he/she purchased slaves from Africa to work on the plantation. These shons of Dutch origin lived with their families in large country houses at the highest point of the plantations. Horse stables, wells and deposits were built around the country house. Many of these country houses are open to the public for visitation. If you visit a country house and its surroundings you will feel as if you are walking through old times. The view of the surroundings is often panoramic. You can call the manager of the country houses to receive more information about special events or opening hours.
